1. Adjust the position of the muffler

2. Add silencers

3. The water bucket trick

This method does not require permanent adjustment but you modify its operation. This method channels exhaust noise into a bucket filled with water, the idea being that water is a sound insulator.

To make this work, connect a hose to the exhaust and drop the other end into a bucket full of water. Make a small hole where the hose reaches the top of the bucket to prevent water from entering the exhaust pipes or place the generator on a higher level.

Note that this only reduces noise from the exhaust pipes and does not reduce noise caused by vibrations.

4. Position it as far away as possible

It’s as simple as that. The further away it is, the less likely you are to hear it. So use longer hoses when possible.

5. Install sound deflectors

Sound deflectors are hard materials that cause sound waves to bounce off in another direction. In some cases they are used to create a more direct line towards you, but in this case you obviously want to install the deflectors so that they point away from your job site or home.

6. Install rubber on generator’s bottom

Some of the noise is simply from vibrations, so having the machine shake less can also lower the decibels. A simple rubber mat under the generator is already sufficient to reduce vibrations or buy a special anti-vibration mat.

You can also purchase rubber feet or wrap rubber around the bottom of the chassis. Make sure the material is heat resistant as these machines can get quite hot.
