Galentine’s Day, dedicated to the celebration of friendship between women, gains traction in the United States every February 13, a day before St Valentine’s Day.

“Galentine’s Day”, an alternative to Valentine’s Day inspired by a television series, has more and more followers among American women, who like to meet each other every year on February 13, that is to say – say on the eve of the famous feast of lovers. A meal with friends, a group cooking class, an evening at home with pink balloons and glitter: these are all ways to celebrate “Galentine’s Day”. But it is also a way of highlighting solidarity between women.

Where does Galentine’s Day come from?

Originally, this day was invented by the series Parks and Recreation, in 2010. In one episode, the heroine, Leslie Knope – played by Amy Poehler – hosts a brunch at her home on February 13 with her closest friends. “What is Galentine’s Day”? Nothing less than the best day of the year. Every February 13, my friends and I leave our husbands and boyfriends at home, meet up and relax over breakfast. Women who celebrate women, ”explains the character.

In English, “gal” is indeed an informal term for girls.

Why celebrate Galentine’s Day?

Witness to the influence of pop culture on our lives, it is clear that reality has far surpassed fiction. For several years now, every February 13, friends, sisters or colleagues have gathered to spend Galentine’s Day together. Even the stars got into it!

This festival is above all an opportunity to celebrate solidarity between women. Moreover, because THIS Day is not an “anti-Valentine’s Day”, anyone can join in the event: singles as well as quarters. Whether it’s a pajama party, dinner at a restaurant, Netflix and pizza party or even karaoke, the main thing is to remind our friends that we love them. And in this particular context of a global pandemic, we need that.

How to celebrate Galentine’s Day?
Reality has surpassed fiction! For several years now, every February 13, friends, colleagues and / or relatives have gathered around the world to spend Galentine’s Day together.

So if that sounds like you, grab your cell phone and send a message to all the people you want to invite. You can offer them lots of activities to celebrate this day:

  • A dedicated music playlist…
  • A good meal
  • A laser game (because it’s funny)
  • Bowling (because it’s fun and there’s more to it than laser games)
  • A spa (because it is relaxation)
  • Some possible gifts if you like
  • … Or whatever you actually want!

But the main interest of this day is to allow us to take stock of our relationship to all these people who do us good.

In relationships between women, the problem is not what you think

Almost all of my colleagues are women, and when I advertise it around me, the same remark comes up regularly:

For many, in a group of women there will always be jealousy, gossip and backstabbing.

We’re not going to be in bad faith: these are behaviors that we have seen in the past. Since then, we have also kept them away from those around us,  because there is no reason to make them to be surounded by us.
