**

This is an incomplete list of people and angels whom the Catholic Church has canonized as saints. According to Catholic theology, all saints enjoy the beatific vision. Many of the saints listed here are to be found in the General Roman Calendar, while others may also be found in the Roman Martyrology; still others are particular to local places and their recognition does not extend to the larger worldwide church.

//

The list of Catholic saints identifies the disciples of Christ whom the Catholic Church, without prejudging others, publicly recognizes as being able to be presented to other believers as models of Christian life, of doctrine and as intercessors with God. Christian holiness is not to be confused with moral perfection: if many saints have led very virtuous lives (in accordance with the prescriptions of the Church), others have had less exemplary lives, some and some having even been able to to be repentant sinners, people who took a radical turn in their life (conversion).

This recognition of the holiness of a person can only begin with the death of the believer or believer who is supposed to “die in the odor of holiness”. Indeed, in Catholic and Orthodox theology, the only holder of holiness, the only Holy One is God himself (the Trinity, that is to say the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit). The person declared holy or blessed can be so only because he is in the radiance of Christ, that is to say in Paradise. It is because the saint is in the intimacy of the holiness of God that he can be officially declared a saint. This declaration, which follows a long procedure (process of canonization), is what is called “bringing to the altars” for the venerable, the beatification for the blessed, and the canonization for the saints.

There are in fact three levels of holiness in the Catholic Church: the venerable ones (first level), of which the Church recognizes the “heroicness of the Christian virtues” without however worship being rendered to his person; the blessed (second level), whose veneration is limited to a region, a country or a religious order; and the saints (third level), whose veneration is extended to the whole Catholic Church. To this list are also attached lists of regional saints (such as that of Breton saints, saints from Lorraine or Switzerland, such as Saint Nicolas de Flue) or individuals (belonging to religious orders such as Saint Dominic, Saint Marie de l’Incarnation , Saint Louise de Marillac).
