Health and Medicine

Health and Medicine

Health is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and does not consist solely of the absence of disease or infirmity”. In this definition by the World Health Organization, WHO, since 1946, health represents “one of the fundamental rights of every human being, whatever their race, religion, political opinions, economic or social condition”.

Contemporary medicine uses clinical examination, healthcare, research, and biomedical technologies to diagnose and treat injuries and illnesses, usually through the prescription of drugs, surgery, or other forms of therapy.

Well-being and Ill-being

Defining Well-being

The answer is far from simple, because there are several kinds: physical, mental, at work, material. Very schematically, it is about a pleasant state procured by the satisfaction of the needs of the body and peace of mind.

The “Zen” Factor

In a stressful world, well-being consists of not feeling stressed, or being “zen”. The antonym is discomfort, which can be experienced painfully, sometimes pushing individuals toward extreme despair or the “pain of living.”

Personal Development

Psychologists speak of “subjective well-being.” Current trends show a high demand for the philosophy of happiness and personal development coaches to help individuals grow and evaluate their sensations.

Subjectivity of Health

Unlike objective health data, well-being is purely subjective. Recourse to aesthetic surgery or psychoanalysis are frequent attempts to achieve this feeling, though they are often budget-dependent.

“But by the way, do you need a happiness teacher to be happy, or a coach to grow personally? For some, the answer is clearly yes!”

Health and Disease

The simplest definition is that health is the absence of disease, both physical and mental. However, the WHO definition (1946) remains: “health is a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being.”

This suggests health is a “pipe dream” or an ideal. Thus, the role of medicine is to provide conditions to achieve as close to that state as possible through hygiene and prevention.
