Magnesium is an alkaline earth metal. It is the ninth most abundant element in the universe. It is the product, in large aging stars, of the sequential addition of three helium nuclei to a carbon nucleus. Since magnesium is little stored in the body, it must be supplied in sufficient and regular quantities through food.
