History and Discovery

Antigua’s story began on November 10, 1493, when Christopher Columbus, on his second voyage, came across this beautiful island. He named it after his patron saint, Mary, who was highly revered as the Virgen de la Antigua in Seville Cathedral. Even though Columbus likely didn’t step foot on the island himself, his reports described it as inhabited by native peoples, lacking in drinking water and valuable resources.

Barbuda is an island located in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It is part of the country of Antigua and Barbuda, which is situated in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles. Barbuda lies north of Antigua and is approximately 38 miles (61 kilometers) to the north of the larger island. The two islands together make up the nation of Antigua and Barbuda.

Colonial Times and Politics

It wasn’t until 1632, nearly 150 years after its discovery, that the British colonized Antigua. In 1666, during the Second Anglo-Dutch War, the island was briefly captured by the French.

In 1674, Antigua joined forces with Nevis, St. Kitts, and Montserrat, forming a confederation of English island colonies. They established a shared House of Representatives under Governor William Stapleton. This marked the beginning of sugar cane cultivation, which led to the arrival of thousands of enslaved individuals over the next century. The slave population grew from 12,500 in 1713 to around 37,500 by 1775. In 1833, slavery was abolished in Britain, with generous compensation to owners, while former slaves were left landless and uncompensated.

British colonial rule continued until 1981, when Antigua declared its independence on November 1st. The colony’s name was changed to the independent state of Antigua and Barbuda, which now operates as a parliamentary monarchy. The capital, Saint John’s, remains on Antigua.
